South Africa- South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: English and Afrikaans, the latter originating from Dutch and serving as the first language of most white and colored South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fourth most-spoken first language. South Africa is ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank, and is considered to be a newly industrialised country. Its economy is the second largest in Africa, and the 34th-largest in the world. In terms of purchasing power parity, South Africa has the seventh-highest per capita income in Africa, although poverty and inequality remain widespread, with about a quarter of the population unemployed and living on less than US$1.25 a day. Nevertheless, South Africa has been identified as a middle power in international affairs, and maintains significant regional influence.

There are two main brands of cider produced in South Africa, Hunters and Savanna Dry. They are produced and distributed through Distell Group Limited. Hunters Gold was first introduced in South Africa in 1988 as an alternative to beer. The Hunters range includes Hunters Dry, Hunters Gold and Hunters Export. Savanna Dry was introduced in 1996 and also comes in a Light Premium variety. Craft cideries in South Africa are on the increase, namely Windermere real apple cider and Everson's cider both from the Elgin valley. Windermere cider is the oldest cidery in South Africa and produces real apple cider from whole Windermere farm apples. Both are traditional cideries with the cider being oak aged.

Savanna Cider- Our story begins way back in the day (when cans were all the rage and the ciders sweet)... Savanna, a refreshingly new all-natural dry cider hit the scene in South Africa in 1996 and immediately established itself with its distinctively dry taste as its trademark. Ours was the first cider in South Africa to be packaged in glass and while the rest have since caught up, compared to other ciders, our bottle has a very unique "dumpy" shape. And although it may be short, it has a lot of bottle. A witty one-liner, a quirky little bottle and a superbly satisfying taste - everything about Savanna makes you smile. Our pay-off line says it all. Savanna. It's dry. But you can drink it.

Savanna Cider had been sold in the USA but due to a disparity in exchange rates it is not at this time... if that changes and you know of a new USA retailer/importer please let us know...

THE CIDER:

Savanna Dry- is a clear 100% apple cider in a unique see through bottle and made from the juice of crushed Elgin apples, a lush region of the Western Cape. The magic of transforming humble apple juice into sublime cider is all in the fermentation process. 6% ABV and energy content of 244 kJ/100 ml.
